Emily Ann Maier

Site Reliability Engineer–Software Engineer

Google LLC
New York, New York

I’m currently a SRE–SWE on the Social Storage SRE team at Google working on building and maintaining various distributed systems.

I’m the SRE technical lead for a reliable queuing system used by many Google-internal systems to perform asynchronous message processing that enable such features as automated voicemail transcription, text indexing, spam and abuse filtering, and notification delivery to smartphones.

I also work on keeping up some of Google’s other distributed systems that provide storage for systems such as Google+, Hangouts, and Youtube commenting and streaming.

Software Developer

EditShare LLC
Watertown, Massachusetts

I worked as a software developer building systems for storing, streaming, and editing of digital media. I primarily worked on the EditShare File System (EFS), a distributed filesystem underlying the company’s high-end systems that store raw and in-production media files across servers using algorithms similar to RAID.

Within EFS, I mostly worked on including the ability to set bandwidth limitations for users, integrating TLS and Kerberos/Active Directory integration into the filesystem’s network protocols, and creating drivers to that Windows, macOS, and Linux machines could directly connect to the filesystem without having to use SMB/AFP/NFS as a shim layer.

Additionally, I wrote large amounts of integration code so that the EFS layer worked seamlessly with the company’s higher-level software as well as compatibility code to work around issues in third-party video editors that the customers used.

Software Development Intern

Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University
Blacksburg, Virginia

I worked as a web developer building a Firefox plugin for the University library. Written in JavaScript, it provided quick access to search for college databases as well as page annotations. For example, if an ISBN on a webpage related to a book in the library, the extension automatically linked the ISBN to the relevant library catalog page.
